Bombardier to Help Restore the First Lear Jet 23
The Classic Lear Jet Foundation has signed a long-term agreement with Bombardier, which will provide a home for its project to restore the first delivered Lear Jet 23, serial number 23-003, to flying condition in Wichita.

The Classic Lear Jet Foundation, a nonprofit organization seeking to restore the first delivered Lear Jet 23 (serial number 23-003) to flying condition in Wichita, has signed a long-term agreement with Bombardier, which will provide a home for the project.
In May 2023, Lear Jet 23-003 was moved into a former aircraft delivery hangar, where the organization has since held several events and displays of the jet. Most of the restoration work on the light twin-engine aircraft is being carried out on site, while the group’s latest progress report notes that removing the cockpit switch panels revealed a number of unidentified wires, each of which will need to be labeled before removal.

It is safe to say that Learjet is the progenitor of today’s multibillion-dollar business aviation industry. When the first Lear 23 was introduced in 1964, it immediately gained recognition among celebrities and industry leaders and created the private jet aviation market, making the Lear Jet name a symbol of a new freedom and privilege in travel.
After many years of storage on the apron at Bartow Executive Airport, Lear 23-003 was rescued by the Classic Learjet Foundation.

To conduct a thorough structural assessment, all wiring must be removed and the old paint stripped from the fuselage. This work will require moving the aircraft to another bay. The foundation said the certainty provided by the agreement would significantly accelerate the project’s progress and thanked the city of Wichita for its cooperation in supporting approval of the hosting agreement.
