Cessna Citation Ascend Makes Its First Public Flight in Europe

Textron Aviation’s new midsize Citation Ascend business jet has arrived at the Aero Friedrichshafen air show.

Cessna Citation Ascend Makes Its First Public Flight in Europe

Textron Aviation’s Cessna Citation Ascend is making its European air show debut at Aero Friedrichshafen in Germany. The new midsize model landed at the exhibition site and is parked alongside its Citation Longitude counterpart, which is also appearing at the event for the first time.

The Ascend, registration N502XL, is making a European demonstration tour that began on April 2 at London Farnborough Airport. It will make several stops in Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and Scandinavia.

The super-midsize Longitude is the largest aircraft in the U.S. manufacturer’s lineup and received EASA certification back in 2021. According to Textron’s vice president of sales in Europe, Duncan Van De Velde, the company hopes EASA will validate the FAA type certificate for the Ascend in the second quarter.

Many of the features introduced on the Ascend were proposed by members of Textron’s XLS customer advisory board. These include cabin windows that are 15% larger, a flat floor, a Bongiovi Aviation wireless audio system, a wireless phone charger integrated into a ledge on the side panels, as well as 19 USB ports and a Gogo Galileo HDX connectivity system. Cabin acoustics have been improved through new door and curtain seals.

The cockpit is equipped with the Garmin G5000 avionics suite and three flight displays. This is new for the XLS family, which previously used the Collins Pro Line 21 system. It also marks the completion of the transition to all-Garmin avionics across Citation models in production.

The Ascend’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D turbofan engines provide 100 lb more thrust per engine than the PW545C engines on earlier XLS/XLS+ models. Carrying four passengers, the model can fly 1,940 nautical miles, which Van De Velde said enables nonstop flights throughout Europe. The twin-engine aircraft is also equipped with a Honeywell auxiliary power unit that can be left running while the crew assists passengers on the ground and performs other tasks at FBOs (airlines).

The newest Citation model offers maintenance intervals of 18 months or 800 flight hours, while the PW545D engines have a time between overhauls of 6,000 hours, which is 1,000 hours longer than on earlier models in the turbofan engine family—and 500 hours longer specifically for the hot section. Operators can spread maintenance costs through Textron’s fixed-rate ProParts and ProTech contracts, and on that basis hourly direct operating costs are estimated at approximately $2,200.

Since the newest model in the Citation Excel/XLS family was unveiled at EBACE 2023 in Geneva, it has attracted numerous orders from Europe. One potential new customer is a Mediterranean entrepreneur who already owns a small Citation M2 jet and now wants to acquire an Ascend and a Latitude for longer business trips.

According to Textron, more than 1,700 of the company’s turboprop aircraft are based in Europe. These include more than 850 Cessna Citation business jets, 450 Beechcraft King Air turboprops, and 175 Cessna Caravan turboprops based in Europe. Various piston-engine models and the all-electric Pipistrel Velis Electro will join these aircraft in the manufacturer’s static display.
