Yesterday, the Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 prototype made its first flight, advancing Textron Aviation’s next-generation light jet program toward FAA certification and entry into service in 2027. Piloted by Andrew Thorson and Tanner Towns, the first flight lasted 2.7 hours and focused on evaluating the aircraft’s handling qualities and key systems. The test aircraft reached a maximum altitude of 41,000 ft and a speed of 263 knots. The aircraft will now move into an expanded phase of flight testing.

“This prototype is now undergoing its flight-test program, and we continue our thorough evaluation as we steadily progress toward certification,” said Chris Hearne, senior vice president of engineering and programs at Textron Aviation.

The Citation CJ4 Gen3 is equipped with the new next-generation Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite. The Citation CJ4 Gen3, which is being prepared for FAA certification this year, uses the Garmin G3000 system. The M2 Gen3 has a maximum range of 1,550 nautical miles and a maximum payload of 1,510 lb, accommodates up to eight passengers, and has baggage capacity of up to 725 lb. The interior features updates including a premium cabin design, accent lighting, wireless charging, USB-A and USB-C ports, and an optional folding seat that can be used as a cargo area.

“This achievement reflects the dedication and professionalism of our team and underscores our commitment to designing, certifying and delivering the best aircraft to our customers,” Hearne said.
