Garmin Launches Next-Generation Aviator Watches

New features include voice commands, PlaneSync connectivity, aircraft data access, aviation weather, health tracking and enhanced mapping.

Garmin Launches Next-Generation Aviator Watches

The new Garmin D2 Air X15 and D2 Mach 2 watches are now available, adding new aviation, fitness and smart-band features to the aviation watch lineup. Both models are compatible with Garmin PlaneSync for viewing aircraft information and also support avionics connectivity, aviation morning reports and voice control.

The 45 mm D2 Air X15 is priced at $649.99 and features an AMOLED touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 3. It also has an LED flashlight with multiple white-light brightness modes and a red LED, previously available only on the D2 Mach 1. Users can see dynamically changing colors corresponding to current weather conditions at a selected airport.

PlaneSync connectivity allows pilots of PlaneSync-equipped aircraft to view the aircraft dashboard on either new watch, providing remote access to fuel, electrical power, database and aircraft location data. The watches also display flight and navigation information from avionics, as well as crew alerts from compatible avionics equipment.

Other features shared by the D2 Air X15 and Mach 2 include a morning weather forecast for the day, weather at a selected airport and a personalized health summary based on sleep and activity data. Users can use voice commands to set a timer on the watch or start an activity, including dedicated aviation commands such as “start flight,” “direct to” and “show weather zones.”

The voice notes feature allows users to add geotagged voice notes, enabling pilots to provide context during a flight or even set a reminder to look at something after returning to the ground. Users can also use both devices to communicate through the Garmin Messenger app, which connects to compatible satellite communication devices, whether installed aboard the aircraft or portable.

The D2 Mach 2 is priced at $1,349.99 for the 47 mm version and $1,499.99 for the 51 mm version. The AMOLED display is protected by sapphire crystal, while the watch features a new sensor guard and leakproof buttons. The smaller version has a titanium bezel, polymer case and Oxford Brown leather strap. The 51 mm D2 Mach 2 features a carbon-gray Diamond-like Carbon (DLC)-coated titanium bezel, polymer case and ventilated carbon-gray DLC-coated titanium bracelet.

A key difference between the D2 Air X15 and D2 Mach 2 is the latter’s aviation maps, which include detailed topography, terrain shading, color-coded airspace boundaries, user waypoints, intersections, VOR beacons and more, according to Garmin. Users can zoom in on runways to determine their location and orientation, view a real-time track log or navigation chain, and select a customizable aircraft icon.

Other D2 Mach 2 features include setting personal weather minimums and receiving alerts when thresholds are exceeded at nearby and other airports. When the weather at a selected airport exceeds the set minimums, the watch face turns orange.
