How upset-recovery training can qualify for an insurance credit

Eligible 5X5 policyholders can earn a 5% premium credit by completing qualifying APS upset-prevention and recovery training within the previous 12 months, AIN reported. Added proficiency carries a dollar value.

Proficiency Beyond the Minimum

APS combines academic instruction, simulator sessions and in-aircraft training, according to AIN’s November 2026 coverage. Upset Prevention and Recovery Training, or UPRT, develops prevention, recognition and recovery skills for unexpected aircraft upsets that threaten to become loss-of-control events.

The distinction has practical consequences. AIN’s July 2025 analysis identifies loss of control in flight as a leading fatal-accident cause. Training aims to prepare pilots for unfamiliar situations before they face those conditions in an aircraft with passengers aboard.

“Advanced training is one of the most meaningful investments a pilot can make in safety,” said Paul “BJ” Ransbury, CEO of Aviation Performance Solutions.

The appeal extends beyond the invoice. For owners, better preparation for the unexpected supports the confidence they depend on when flying their own aircraft privately.

An Owner-Flown Market Incentive

The partnership fits 5X5’s market positioning. AIN reported in September 2025 that the insurer was focusing on the high-end owner-flown market. Its Safety Rewards programme recognises voluntary safety measures and training beyond regulatory minimums, according to AIN’s November 2026 coverage.

“At 5X5, we believe that pilots who invest in their proficiency are making an investment in safety,” said Doug Tibbs, managing director of 5X5 Aviation Insurance.

What should owners confirm before booking? Check policy eligibility, the qualifying APS course, the available upgrade and the completion deadline. The 5% credit offers an incentive; it doesn't establish that the training delivers a corresponding reduction in accident risk.

Choose training for its operational relevance. Treat the insurance saving as a useful dividend.
