Pre-Owned Business Jet Prices Fall 8%

According to the latest data from Jefferies analysts, pre-owned business jet inventory continued to grow this month, increasing by 20% year over year and by 4% since July. Citing its own data and Amstat data, Jefferies added that inventory of younger aircraft that went out of production less than seven years ago rose by 23% year over year, but remained low at 3.9%.

Overall, 1,259 business jets were listed for sale last month, representing 5.2% of the total fleet. By comparison, 1,051 aircraft were listed for sale in August 2023, while the share of the existing fleet increased compared with the annual average of 4.6%. The growth extended across all aircraft sizes: midsize aircraft rose by 23%, heavy aircraft by 19%, and light aircraft by 18% year over year. At the same time, prices declined by 8% year over year and remained at July’s level.

The picture varies by manufacturer: the number of Embraer aircraft listed for sale remained at last year’s level of 39, with 3.3% of the fleet available. An increase in the number of available Legacy aircraft offset a decline in the number of Phenom aircraft available for sale. Average Embraer aircraft prices fell by 10% to $11.9 million.

Meanwhile, the number of Bombardier aircraft increased by 13% to 69, representing 3.9% of the total fleet. The number of Learjet aircraft rose by 40% and Global aircraft by 24%, while the number of available Challenger aircraft declined by 29%. The average price fell by 7% to $21.9 million.

Gulfstream inventory also rose by 27% to 90 aircraft, with 4% of the fleet available compared with 3.2% a year earlier. This increase resulted from the number of available G650 aircraft rising by eight and G450 aircraft by six. The average price of Gulfstream aircraft declined by 12% to $21.6 million.

Textron Aviation’s available Cessna Citation fleet reached 141, up 33% from the previous year, driven by the addition of another 20 CJ2/CJ2+ aircraft and 12 additional Sovereign aircraft to the market. Available aircraft represent 4.1% of the active Citation fleet. Prices declined by 4%.

Dassault also saw inventory grow by 28% year over year, reaching 4.4% of the active fleet. This compares with 3.5% a year earlier, although it was also off a low base of 23 aircraft for sale, Jefferies noted. Falcon aircraft prices fell by 7%.
